VLC by VideoLan (code) is the best open source media player out there today for iOS (and many other platforms). VLC has been around a very long time, is a well known project, and manages to bring many features (like playing from streams, or hosting a file server locally from your phone) that other apps just don't have.
You can use VLC for listening to podcasts, watching movies, and listening to online radio for free, with a codebase you can easily peruse (and learn from if you're into that kind of thing 👨🏾💻👩🏾💻).
